When The X-Files first aired, that famous line carried a certain mystery.

It suggested that somewhere beyond classified documents, government secrets, unexplained lights in the sky, and strange encounters, objective truth existed.

You simply had to look for it.

Fast-forward to the Age of AI.

Apparently…

The truth isn’t out there anymore.

It’s on social media.

According to everyone.

Breaking News: Everybody Is Now a Truth Creator

There was a time when information traveled through newspapers, radio, and television. Today, billions of people receive news through social media, where platforms have become one of the world’s primary gateways to information. Studies by the Reuters Institute and the Pew Research Center continue to show that social media plays an increasingly important role in how people discover current events, particularly among younger audiences.

That’s fascinating.

It’s also terrifying.

Because social media didn’t simply democratize publishing.

It democratized certainty.

Politicians publish “truth.”

Businesses publish “truth.”

Churches publish “truth.”

Influencers publish “truth.”

Anonymous pages publish “truth.”

Artificial intelligence summarizes “truth.”

Everyone arrives carrying screenshots, charts, testimonials, exclusive revelations, and captions that somehow all begin with the same invisible disclaimer:

“Trust me.”

The strange part is that attention has become so valuable that almost every institution now behaves like a content creator.

Businesses chase engagement because customers scroll.

Organizations chase engagement because supporters scroll.

Public figures chase engagement because influence scrolls.

Even the most serious announcements are packaged like thumbnails competing for clicks.

It’s as if reality itself hired a social media manager.

I Want to Believe

One of the most iconic posters in television history hangs behind Fox Mulder’s desk.

A flying saucer.

A blurry sky.

Three unforgettable words.

I WANT TO BELIEVE.

Ironically…

These days I’d rather believe in unidentified flying objects than every perfectly edited, emotionally charged, algorithm-approved post pretending to be objective while quietly serving someone’s interests.

At least UFOs never asked me to:

Did AI Change the Truth?

People often ask whether artificial intelligence changes truth.

I don’t think it does.

Truth remains remarkably stubborn.

What AI changes is speed.

Reach.

Scale.

Translation.

Summarization.

Distribution.

Algorithms then perform another trick.

They don’t necessarily reward what is most accurate.

They reward what keeps human attention alive.

Those are two very different competitions.

One searches for truth.

The other searches for engagement.

Confusing the two may be one of the defining mistakes of our generation.

Today, it sounds practical.

Or serve it?

Will you verify before sharing?

Or share before verifying?

Will you seek understanding?

Or merely confirmation?

Those choices determine far more than any AI model ever will.

Drop Mic. Trust No One.

The older I become, the less interested I am in reading posts that confirm everything I already believe.

I’m far more interested in ideas capable of proving me wrong.

Because truth has never depended on popularity.

It has never depended on virality.

It has never depended on followers.

It has never depended on who posted first.

Or who shouted loudest.

Artificial intelligence did not redefine truth.

It simply exposed how desperately humans compete to own it.

Perhaps the greatest danger in the Age of AI isn’t that machines will deceive us.

Perhaps it’s that we willingly choose the version of truth that makes us feel most comfortable.

The truth is still out there.

Unfortunately…

everyone is posting it.

So here’s my final advice.

Borrowed from one of the greatest television series ever made.

Trust no one.

Not politicians.

Not influencers.

Not businesses.

Not anonymous pages.

Not artificial intelligence.

And certainly not yourself until you’ve asked one uncomfortable question:

“Do I believe this because it’s true… or because I wanted it to be true?”

That question may become humanity’s greatest survival skill in the Age of AI.

Last week, I argued in AIWhyLive that the new currency in the Age of AI isn’t time—it’s value. The response surprised me. Some readers agreed immediately. Others asked a question that quietly lingered in my mind long after I had published the article.

“If value is the new currency, then what happened to time?”

The more I reflected on it, the more I realized I had skipped an important chapter.

Time never stopped being valuable.

Artificial intelligence didn’t replace time. It didn’t manufacture a twenty-fifth hour or persuade the Earth to spin more slowly. Every sunrise still deposits the same twenty-four hours into every human life, regardless of wealth, education, profession, or nationality.

What AI changed wasn’t time itself.

It changed the exchange rate between time and value.

Once you understand that, every hour begins to feel different.

From Data to Value—and Now to Time

About a year ago, I explored another question in AIWhyLive: “Is Data the New Oil in the AI Era?“ At the time, the comparison felt compelling. Oil fueled the Industrial Revolution. Data fuels artificial intelligence. The analogy made sense because AI feeds on data just as engines once depended on oil.

But after another year of living with AI—writing, coding, researching, designing, experimenting, and building almost every day—I realized that data is only the fuel. Fuel is important, but no one drives simply to admire gasoline.

People drive to reach destinations.

Likewise, businesses do not collect data simply to own data. They collect it to create something meaningful.

That “something” is value.

And value cannot exist without one resource that every human possesses in exactly the same amount.

Time.

One hundred pesos today does not necessarily buy what one hundred pesos bought years ago. The number printed on the bill remains the same, but what it can accomplish changes over time.

The calendar hasn’t changed.

I Asked AI About Zombies. It Gave Me a Reality Check About Humans.

Zombie stories have fascinated me for years.

In fact, this isn’t my first visit to the undead.

Years ago, I explored whether zombies should be feared in “Zombies: Walking Dead or Running Dead?“ Later, I even wrote an “Anti-Zombie Manifesto,“ arguing that surviving any apocalypse would depend less on weapons and more on human behavior.

Back then, zombies were fiction.

Today, artificial intelligence gives us an entirely different way of asking the same question.

So I opened ChatGPT and asked a simple question.

“Is a zombie apocalypse scientifically possible?”

I expected science.

I received something much more interesting.

A lesson about ourselves.

AI’s Answer Was Surprisingly Honest

The short answer?

Probably not.

At least not the Hollywood version.

The dead do not suddenly return to life and start chasing the living.

Human biology simply doesn’t work that way.

But AI didn’t dismiss the question.

Instead, it explained that nature already contains organisms capable of altering the behavior of living hosts.

Parasites.

Viruses.

Certain fungi.

Rabies, for example, can dramatically change the behavior of infected animals and humans, while fungi such as Ophiocordyceps famously manipulate ants. These are fascinating biological phenomena—but they are a long way from movie-style zombies.

So while science gives us reasons to be curious…

it gives us very little reason to expect the dead to rise.

Even Elon Musk Couldn’t Resist Talking About Zombies

Apparently, I’m not the only one fascinated by the subject.

Years ago, Elon Musk jokingly promoted a flamethrower by saying,

“When the zombie apocalypse happens, you’ll be glad you bought a flamethrower.”

He later joked that rumors he was secretly creating a zombie apocalypse were “completely false.”

But what’s more interesting is that Musk has also spent years warning about an entirely different kind of apocalypse—one involving artificial intelligence if it develops without sufficient safeguards.

More recently, xAI has even used fictional scenarios such as zombie apocalypses as part of conversational AI training to make its systems more natural.

Perhaps that’s because zombies have never really been about zombies.

They’ve always been about us.

Then AI Asked a Better Question

Instead of asking,

“Can zombies exist?”

Perhaps we should ask,

“What makes ordinary people stop thinking?”

That question is much harder.

Because now we’re no longer talking about biology.

We’re talking about humanity.

Maybe they don’t groan.

Maybe they instantly share headlines they never opened.

Maybe they don’t infect people with bites.

Maybe they spread fear.

Rumors.

Outrage.

Half-truths.

One click at a time.

The internet has given humanity something far more contagious than fictional viruses.

Information.

The good.

The bad.

And the completely fabricated.

AI Isn’t Afraid of Zombies

It’s Afraid of Human Decisions

One thing surprised me about AI’s answer.

It wasn’t worried about the dead.

It was worried about the living.

During any crisis, misinformation can spread faster than facts.

Fear can outrun evidence.

Rumors can travel farther than truth.

The greatest damage often comes not from the original event…

but from how people react to it.

That’s incredible. But there’s a catch.

Technology has become incredibly good at giving us second chances. Life hasn’t.

Modern technology is built around one comforting promise: mistakes don’t have to be permanent.

Artificial intelligence takes it further. It doesn’t just help you undo mistakes—it helps you create better versions. A better paragraph. A better image. A better idea. A better plan.
